A Very Special Day for Royal Air Force Halton

Air Marshal Sir ‘Dusty’ Miller joined the Royal Air Force in 1967 as an apprentice at Royal Air Force Halton. His love of flying led him into the world of aviation and he was soon to fly military aircraft such as the Jaguar and Tornado GR1. His career has taken him all over the world - he has recently returned from Naples.
Sadly all good things have to come to an end, Sir Dusty is retiring very shortly, completing what has been a successful and rewarding career. Station Commander, Group Captain Richard Gammage invited Sir Dusty, accompanied by Lady Miller to review No 375 Recruit Training Course - the last occasion that Sir Dusty would wear his uniform officially. Very few Reviewing Officers can say that the first and last time they wore an RAF Uniform was at the same Unit! To show their appreciation, Ex-Halton Apprentices held a special dinner for Sir Dusty and Lady Lesley Miller where, he handed over the mantle of most senior ex apprentice to Air Vice Marshal Nick Kurth, based at High Wycombe.
For Air Marshal Dusty Miller to review a graduation parade on the same parade ground he stood on as a graduating apprentice some 40 years ago, brought back some distant and fond memories for him. There could not be a more fitting way for Sir Dusty to take off his uniform for the last time.
Station Commander, Group Captain Richard Gammage said “It was a privilege for us to have Sir Dusty here today. This was a special occasion for the 112 graduating recruits and for Sir Dusty who began his long, successful and enjoyable career here at Halton. I am sure Sir Dusty will cherish his memories gained over 41 years Service”.
