Most of our UK based Aerial Erectors are part of the Tactical Communications Wing (TCW) which is the Force Element at Readiness within 90 Signals Unit, providing “Expeditionary Information Services Whenever and Wherever they are required”. Since its origins in the 1960s, it has supported a huge number of military operations involving air power by providing vital communications, information services and airfield navigational capabilities to deployed squadrons and units worldwide.
No 1 Expeditionary Radar and Airfield (ERA) Sqn
The primary role of the TCW No 1 Expeditionary Radar and Airfield (ERA) Sqn is to deploy, support and recover a wide range of airfield sensors, navigational aids and information infrastructure in support of the delivery of Air Power worldwide. The sqn comprises two flights, Electronic Engineering Flight (EEF) and Aerial Erector Flight (AEF). No 1 (ERA) Sqn's mission is to provide Force Elements at Readiness to allow 90 Signals Unit to meet its mission.
AEF is the control centre for over 70 Aerial Erectors who are able to respond to any Installation, Maintenance or Modification in the following specialist areas. Aerial Systems - Low Frequency through to Super High Frequency, Fibre Optic and Copper Data Comms Cables, Scaffolding, Mast & Tower Erection as well as Radomes. Although based predominantly at RAF Leeming, Aerial Erectors have regional Servicing Teams at RAF Lossiemouth, RAF Lyneham and RAF Wittering, with further personnel located at RAF Henlow and RAF Brize Norton.
