Joining the RAF
Getting Started
The steps to the highest level
So you want to be in the RAF? Here’s the Altitude step-by-step guide to joining – good luck!
Step 1: Know the RAF, know the role
This might seem obvious, but first you need to learn as much as you can about the RAF, what it does, its history and the way it works.
At the same time, think about what kind of career you want and what you want from it. And by all means, explore other options – it’s important that you make sure an RAF career is your best option.
Got an RAF role in mind already? Then make sure you know exactly what it involves and that it’s definitely the right job for you. And check that you meet the entry requirements – you have to be right for the RAF as well.
Step 2: Contact the RAF
If you’ve got questions about RAF careers or roles, call the RAF Careers advice line on 0845 605 5555 – you can ask for more information, start your application or organise a visit to an Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO) (see Step 3)
Step 3: The Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO)
An appointment at an AFCO is a great opportunity to get to know the RAF, find out about the role you’re thinking of applying for and to meet the kind of people you’ll be working with.
Don’t be nervous, your first visit isn’t a formal interview, but is more of an initial chat to see what jobs might suit you. Remember, though, you should try to make a good impression – so dress smart-casual, and be clean, neat and tidy.
Got a CV? Take it with you. A list of any qualifications and job experience you have, as well as your personal details (name, address, date of birth etc.) will help if you decide to fill out an application form.
Step 4: Tests and interviews
All potential recruits take a series of tests to see if they meet RAF standards – you’ll need to pass them before you can join.
The tests and interviews you do will depend on the type of role you apply for. All RAF roles fit into one of four main groups – Airman/Airwoman, Non-Commissioned Aircrew, Officers and Regiment Gunners.
