The sea can hold many dangers for both RAF and Royal Navy crafts. But with the help of state-of-the-art technology like sonobuoys (highly sensitive sound sensors), Acoustic Weapon Systems Operators can hunt and track the activity of both surface ships and submarines – from the comfort of the cockpit.
As well as an obvious defensive role, Acoustic WSOps – with their special training in recognising different electronic signatures – also take part in life-saving Search and Rescue missions.
