Ceremonial Events

A chance to show our national pride. An opportunity to feel the respect of the public. And great fun too!

From the Queen’s birthday to Red Arrows displays, ceremonial events are a privilege, an honour and a really good time as well. That’s why the RAF loves doing events like:

The Queen’s Birthday Fly-past

On 11 June each year, the RAF participates in a fly-past over Buckingham Palace to mark the official birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. In 2005, the Eurofighter Typhoon was included for the first time as part of a five-plane formation.

RAF Regiment Queen's Colour Squadron

As well as completing military operations in Iraq and UN peacekeeping in the former Yugoslavia, 63 Squadron specialises in ceremonial drills – from synchronised military displays (involving 400 moves without a single spoken command!) to carrying out the famous ‘Changing of the Guard’ at Buckingham Palace.

Remembrance Day

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year, the RAF commemorates those who have sacrificed their lives in conflicts across the world – including RAF personnel. The time, which marks the end of World War One, is an opportunity to remember and respect them – so make sure your school or college honours the minute’s silence!

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF)

The Battle of Britain during the summer of 1940 was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces. The BBMF are a dedicated group of former and current RAF staff who have a huge interest in the battle – organizing displays of some of the aircraft to take part in the battle, including Hurricanes, Lancaster Bombers, Dakotas and the legendary Spitfire.

Red Arrows

Teamwork, trust, dedication, training and excellence. These are the qualities the RAF looks for in their personnel and so it’s no wonder the Red Arrows are the public face of the RAF. After all, you don’t get to the level of performing mind-blowing aerobatic stunts without working well as a team, having total trust in your colleagues and equipment, and being dedicated to a training programme that will produce excellent results.
