Joe wins race for Silverstone prize

15 year-old Altitude member and Air Cadet Joseph Witts recently entered our fantastic British Grand Prix competition – and won!

Joe Witts

He and his Grandad spent the weekend at the world famous Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, watching practice laps, qualification and the race itself. We fired some questions at Joe to find out about his day.

Q. Joe, how was your visit to the British Grand Prix?

Yeah, it was really good.

Q. How did you find out about the competition?

I received an email from Altitude telling me about it. I’ve always liked Formula 1, so I decided to enter.

Q. Had you ever entered an Altitude competition before?

No. I didn’t expect to win but because it was such a good prize I gave it a go. Good job I did!

Q. Did you have far to travel to get to the circuit?

I live in South Wales, near Swansea, so it took about three hours to get there. But because we were there for the whole three days of the event, it was worth it.

Q. What was the atmosphere like at Silverstone?

It was really busy and full of people. And when the Formula 1 cars went past it was really noisy too – but not as noisy as the RAF Typhoon demonstration on the Sunday.

Q. What was the best part of your Silverstone experience?

Probably going up in a helicopter and flying round the circuit.

"Well, I had such a great time that I will definitely be entering more competitions in the future – after all, you never know, so give it a try!"

Q. Did you visit the RAF camp area?

Yeah, it was really good. They had a climbing wall and life size models of a Harrier and a Typhoon, which I sat in. There were also RAF personnel there to talk to.

Q. What do you think of the new Altitude website?

It’s really informative and interesting – it really inspires you to find out more about the RAF.

Q. If you end up joining the RAF, what career would you choose?

I’d like to be a Weapon Systems Operator involved in Electronic Warfare, but if I don’t get the necessary qualifications I’d probably choose the RAF Police.

Q. What would you say to anyone reading this that’s thinking of entering an Altitude competition?

Well, I had such a great time that I will definitely be entering more competitions in the future – after all, you never know, so give it a try!
