Today marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Eric Stanley ‘Sawn-off’ Lock on 3rd August 1941. Lock, who received his nickname because of his height, was the highest scoring British born pilot during the Battle of Britain. Lock was killed in action near Boulogne as a Flight Commander with 611 Squadron by which time he had amassed 26 confirmed victories. As Flight Lieutenant Lock has no known grave, he is remembered at the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey.
