Pre-joining fitness test

The Pre-joining Fitness Test (PJFT)

Everyone who joins the RAF must have a basic level of fitness. So before you can join, you must pass the PJFT.

This test take place at your AFCO or, more likely, at a local gym. The test is a 1.5 mile run on a treadmill, which must be completed in an allocated time, and a specified number of press-ups and sit-ups.

What are the limits?

Time limits for the run vary according to your age, but the following is a guide for people between the ages of 16 and 29 years:

Men: 12 minutes 11 seconds for the run, 4 press-ups and 7 sit-ups.

Women: 14 minutes 26 seconds for the run, 2 press-ups and 6 sit-ups.

Make the grade and we’ll invite you to RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire for the Potential Recruit Training Course.

Pre-Recruit Training Course (PRTC)

The PRTC is a two-day visit designed to help you decide whether a career in the RAF is for you. It also gives us a chance to assess your physical fitness and ability to succeed following further training.

If you find the fitness exercises difficult, our Physical Training Instructors will give you advice on the best way forward.

PRTC at a glance

  • You’ll learn all about the RAF; the duties we perform, the training we do and our role in operations around the world
  • There will be presentations on pay and allowances
  • There will be a series of fitness tests which include shuttle runs, press-ups and sit-ups
  • You’ll attend presentations which outline the importance of fitness in the RAF and how to prepare your body before recruit training
  • You’ll also have the chance to ask any questions

On successful completion of the PRTC, your next step will be the Recruit Training course, also held at RAF Halton.
