Fitness tests
We don’t expect you to be a top athlete to join the RAF, but a good level of basic fitness is essential. Recruit training is a big physical challenge and the fitter you are when you arrive, the easier it will be.
Remember: The main reason that recruits drop out of recruit training is lack of physical fitness. Don’t be caught out – start training as soon as you decide to apply.
Officers, Non-Commissioned Aircrew and Non-Commissioned Air Traffic Controllers - The Officers and Aircrew Selection Centre
Officers, Non-Commissioned Aircrew and Non-Commissioned Air Traffic Controllers undertake a fitness assessment during their time at the Officers and Aircrew Selection Centre (OASC).
The first stage of the assessment consists of completing as many 20-metre shuttle runs as you can – at a steadily increasing speed. The pace is set by a series of electronic beeps, and for this reason the assessment is often called the ‘beep test’.
You’ll then have to perform as many press-ups and sit-ups as you can in one minute.
Airmen/Airwomen - The Pre-Joining Fitness Test
Airmen/airwomen must complete the Pre-Joining Fitness Test, which is held at the nearest AFCO or at a local gym. The test is a 1.5-mile run on a treadmill, which must be completed within the time allocated. A specified number of press-ups and sit-ups must also be completed successfully.
Limits
Time limits vary according to your age and gender. As a guide, if you are aged between 16 and 29, you have to run 1.5 miles in:
Men: 12 minutes and 11 seconds
Women: 14 minutes and 26 seconds
Men also have to complete 4 press-ups and 7 sit-ups, and women 2 and 6 respectively.
RAF Regiment - The Potential Gunner Acquaintance Course
RAF Regiment Gunners carry out combat operations all over the world. Therefore they need to be very fit, so their specialised pre-joining fitness test is designed accordingly. This assessment includes a 3-mile run, press-ups, sit-ups, a multi-stage shuttle run (beep test) and tackling an assault course.
