Initial training

Initial training

The Trainee Gunner (TG) course will prepare you for service in one of the most respected infantry-type regiments in the world. By the end of it, as well as being fitter and more confident than you’ve ever been, you’ll also be part of a close-knit team involved in combat, rescue, ceremonial and humanitarian missions all over the world.

The 29-week course will prepare you for life in the RAF Regiment. It’s not easy, but PGSC has already proved that you’ve got what it takes. Specialist instructors will be on hand to help you and your fellow Trainee Gunners will be by your side.

Every Trainee Gunner who passes the course will be awarded an NVQ Level 2 in Security; Public Services Apprenticeship.

Get a real-life look at the TG course through the eyes of four Trainee Gunners by watching our Trainee Gunner diaries. You’ll also find a week-by-week guide to the course and tips from the instructors.

TG training at a glance

Weapons training

You’ll learn how to handle the SA80 rifle and use the x4 magnification tritium sight. You’ll also undertake bayonet training, learn how to throw a grenade and use night vision equipment to work at night. Your training will start on our firing ranges and end with a series of field exercises.

Fieldcraft

You’ll be taken out into the countryside and taught the skills necessary to survive and fight in a field environment. We’ll cover camouflage and concealment skills, map reading and navigation, battlefield first aid and setting up camp safely. You’ll be living on ration packs and your initiative!

Military drill

RAF Regiment Gunners take pride in their appearance and sense of discipline. Those who excel at drill may one day be chosen to join the prestigious Queen’s Colour Squadron, which performs drill movements to crowds all over the world. For now we’ll teach you how to iron your kit and buff your shoes to a high shine. Your new skills will guarantee you look super sharp on your graduation parade.

Sports and adventurous training

Fitness will be part of your daily routine, so there’s lots of physical training throughout the course. In addition to gym work, swimming and running, you’ll have the opportunity to spend a week at one of our adventure training centres.

Key skills

As well as learning about the heritage and history of the RAF Regiment, we’ll teach you information technology, communications, maths and evidence-gathering skills. You’ll also visit the RAF Museum at Hendon in North London.

Graduation

After 29 weeks of training you’ll be ready for your graduation parade. It’s one of the proudest moments in a Gunner’s career as well as a great day out for your family and friends. It’s your chance to show off your new skills on the parade ground and marks the end of the first step towards your new life in the RAF Regiment.
