Dental Officer

Neville Bo’s story...

Neville Bo

‘I joined the RAF to do something different - I can always settle back into general practice later on.’

My role

‘Toothache is really debilitating and if you’re suffering from it, you just can’t work. So Dental Officers make sure RAF personnel are fit to do their jobs, whether it’s on a base in the UK or deployed overseas.’

My day

‘Here at RAF Lyneham, my work’s just like a normal high street dentist really, with routine check ups and emergency appointments throughout the day. I’m also responsible for some of the staff in the practice.’

My experiences

‘I was sponsored by the RAF through my dentistry qualification at Liverpool University and now I’m doing my postgraduate training as well as treating patients day to day in the practice.

‘There’s a lot of training available through the RAF – from lectures and practicals to BScs and MScs – so people are often very highly qualified when they leave.’

My life

‘I live in the officers’ mess, which I suppose is a bit like being back in halls at university. We all have our meals together and go to the bar in the evening – it’s a really friendly place to live.’
