The job

For your first tour, you’ll be assigned to an operational base in the UK. You could be checking that the aircrew’s equipment is in proper working order and making the necessary adjustments to optimise performance. Or you could be responsible for carrying out maintenance and assisting more experienced Survival Equipment Fitters with major repairs.

Training

After your basic recruit training at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire, you’ll be given specialist training at RAF Cosford, near Wolverhampton; this lasts for about seven months. The course will provide you with an understanding of survival equipment in a military environment. You’ll learn how to maintain parachutes, life-rafts, aircrew survival equipment and flying clothing. You’ll also be taught the basic skills of mechanical and electrical engineering. At the end of the course, you’ll be on your way to gaining an NVQ Level 3 in Aeronautical Engineering (Component) Maintenance and will have already completed Key Skills at Level 2.
