The job

When you join the RAF as a Weapon Systems Operator, you’ll be streamed to become a specialist in Acoustics, Electronic Warfare or Crewman.

Combing the world’s oceans from the North to the South Pole, Acoustic Weapon Systems Operators fly on board Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft and track underwater targets.

With the help of sonobuoys (highly sensitive acoustic sensors), you’ll hunt and track both submarines and surface ships. You’ll be trained to recognise the distinctive electronic signature of all kinds of vessel. You could also take part in life-saving Search and Rescue missions.
