Choice of sports
There’s a whole locker room full of team sports waiting for you in the RAF – football, netball, rugby, hockey and athletics to name but a few. We also offer our personnel the opportunity to take part in more unusual sports like fencing, bobsleigh, power-kiting, power-lifting and gliding.
The RAF Sports Board supports over 45 sports, all of which have enthusiastic committees, responsible for the organisation of championships and fixtures and the development of coaches and officials. In addition, they often provide funding for our top athletes too.
‘If you’re a member of an RAF sports team, you’ll often be given time to go and play the game. We also do regular sports as a unit. I’ve done loads out here in Ascension: kayaking, swimming and I’m hoping to try my hand at windsurfing.’

‘When I arrived at my first posting I looked at the list of clubs available and thought fencing looked pretty interesting. Now I’m training to be a coach and winning events at competitions. It just goes to show that you’re only limited by your own imagination.’

‘I’m into extreme sports like skydiving, but what I enjoy most are my netball and volleyball. There’s so much choice here so everyone finds something that interests them.’
