Our hi-tech gear
The RAF uses leading-edge technology – our aircraft are among the most advanced in the world. We’re constantly updating and enhancing our equipment to ensure that we keep our fighting edge.
Here are just a few of the amazing aircraft we use in the RAF:
- The Typhoon F2 (Eurofighter) – is a highly advanced, multi-role aircraft, capable of both airborne and ground attack engagements. This extremely agile aircraft is powered by twin EJ200 turbofan engines and can reach a maximum speed of Mach 2. The Typhoon is equipped with long- and medium-range air-to-air missiles, advanced short-range air-to-air missiles and the advanced ECR90 radar, which can track multiple targets at long range.
- The Tornado GR4 – is the latest version of our primary attack aircraft . It can fly at low levels and can even exceed twice the speed of sound. Equipped with laser and GPS-guided missiles the Tornado GR4 also uses the new RAPTOR reconnaissance pod to image targets from a distant stand-off position.
- The Merlin HC3 – is our most up-to-date helicopter . It's armed and able to carry 24 fully-equipped personnel. It can air-to-air refuel and uses a vibration-dampening system to cut crew fatigue
- The Nimrod MRA4 – soon to replace our entire Nimrod fleet. This is the most advanced surveillance aircraft in the world , with a complete range of radar and acoustic sensors.
But it's not just our aircraft that have top notch technology; from detection and communications systems, to medical equipment, flight simulators – right down to the clothes we wear; we use the latest and best hi-tech gear, serviced by our superb and highly trained engineers. That way, we can be totally confident whenever we're called into action.
