Information about RAF Cottesmore
Cottesmore is located in Rutland, the smallest county in England, measuring only 16 miles by 16 miles, and situated at the heart of the UK, between Leicester and Peterborough. The county has 2 historic market towns, Oakham and Uppingham, and 54 quintessential English villages spread across the rolling, rural landscape. Oakham is the nearest town, packed full of historic buildings, interesting landmarks and stylish shops.
At the centre of the county lies Rutland Water, the largest man-made lake in Western Europe. The attractive 3,100-acre reservoir has an international reputation for providing a balance of sport, leisure and wildlife conservation and offers everyone the opportunity to try something new.
RAF Cottesmore is the core component of Joint Force Harrier, and is currently home to the operational Harrier Squadrons: 1(Fighter) Squadron, Squadron 800 Naval Air Squadron and 801 Naval Air Squadron. The base is also home to 504 (County of Nottingham) Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force. The Station is due to close in 2012.
