Information about RAF Wyton
The area around Wyton has been associated with aviation for over 90 years – a period that almost embraces the entire history of aviation. Several aviation milestones have been recorded from RAF Wyton. The first sortie of WW2 took off from here as well as the first aircraft of the 1000 bomber raids on Germany. The legendary Pathfinder Force was formed here and Wyton aircraft took part in the last Bomber Command Raid on Germany. 1981 marked the retirement from Wyton of the Royal Air Forces last serving Spitfire pilot.
The Wyton airfield is still active with two university air squadrons based here:
ULAS University London Air Squadron
UCAS University Cambridge Air Squadron
The picture postcard village of Houghton & Wyton is 4 miles away and is itself steeped in history, the village has one of the oldest working mills in the country and regularly sells the flour it produces. There are plenty of ramblers’ routes that start from the village, most of which are suitable for children.
We have two towns nearby, St Ives is 5 miles distance from the station and Huntingdon is 7 miles away. Both towns have a good selection of shops and banks with Huntingdon being the slightly larger of the two. Our nearest major city is Peterborough which is easily reached via the A1 or by using the regular train service from Huntingdon.
The Housing estate at Wyton comprises of Service families Accommodation, privately owned (previously SFA) and rental properties through the local housing scheme (HHP). The estate is located next to RAF Wyton with pedestrian gates allowing access to the station. Gate cards are required and are available through passes & permits at the main guardroom. Single Living Accommodation is at present located at RAF Brampton which is 7 miles from RAF Wyton, MT provide a regular shuttle service between the two sites for service personnel.
RAF Wyton at this present time is going through some major changes under a programme to rationalise & integrate the DI Estate (PRIDE), PRIDE aims to provide modern accommodation to meet the needs of current intelligence operations and to improve ways of working through reducing the fragmented DI Estate. Once completed RAF Wyton will be home to HQ ICG, JARIC, JAGO, HQ & 42 Eng Regt (Geo), RSMS, DSSO & Defence Estates. All being well PRIDE is hoped to be completed in the autumn of 2013.
