Iraq (Operation KIPION)
The Royal Air Force’s major presence in Iraq has finished with the withdrawal from Basrah airport and the end of the British mission in the country. A small number of personnel and equipment remain in and around Iraq to provide support to the remaining British forces and to finalize the drawdown. This support comprised Puma helicopters at Baghdad to assist the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Merlin helicopters in Kuwait to assist with the withdrawal of elements of equipment and personnel from Southern Iraq and a small detachment of C130 Hercules aircraft to provide air transport in and out of Iraq. The Puma and Merlin Helicopters both fully withdrew from Iraq and Kuwait by July 2009. The Merlin Helicopters were the last aircraft to leave Iraq as they transported the final equipment and personnel from the region.
