Tribute to the Few

Original oil 4ft x 3ft

Aviation artist Eddie Ash found inspiration in the Battle of Britain’s 70th anniversary to produce his largest ever oil painting.

Entitled ‘Tribute to the Few’, the picture portrays Spitfires of the RAF’s 92 Squadron, heading out to meet German opposition over the English Channel. The flight is lead by Geoffrey ‘Boy’ Wellum, who years later would write First Light…one of the finest air combat accounts put to paper.

Eddie said: “I got the notion to paint the picture back in April, and it occurred to me that with this being the anniversary year, I simply had to do it. Initially I thought it wrong to pinpoint any one squadron, because all the pilots were incredibly brave, but after reading First Light, it made perfect sense to depict Geoffrey Wellum’s aircraft and others from 92 Squadron.”

The picture, which took almost 400 hours to complete, is available as a limited edition (100 copies) full-sized giclee, priced at £350, or as a 24in x 18in Litho print at £60.
