History of 516 Squadron:

No.516 Squadron was formed at Dundonald on 28 April 1943 by renumbering No.1441 (Combined Operations) Flight. Its purpose was to provide aircraft for co-operation with Combined Operations training units in western Scotland, by carrying out practice attacks on shipping and landing craft, smoke screen laying, gas spraying, low level reconnaissance and demonstrations of aircraft to army units. A mixed establishment of fighters and twin-engined aircraft was used for these trials until after the invasion of Europe, the requirement for such a unit having declined by the end of the year to an extent that allowed disbandment to take place on 2 December 1944.
