Adventure Training
The military aim and definition of Adventurous Training (AT) can be found below.
The Aim of Adventurous Training:
"To develop, through authorised challenging pursuits and within an outdoor environment, leadership and the qualities necessary to enhance the performance of military personnel during peace and war."
The Definition of Adventurous Training:
"Challenging outdoor training for Service Personnel in specified adventurous activities, involving controlled exposure to risk, to develop leadership, teamwork, physical fitness, moral and physical courage, among other personal attributes and skills vital to operational capability."
The main RAF recognised AT activities include rock climbing, kayaking, mountaineering, sky diving, sailing, mountain biking, sub aqua diving, skiing, caving and gliding. The level of skill in each activity available for each student can range from proficiency to leadership qualifications.
MASUAS employs a highly qualified full time RAF Sgt who offers various activities at varying levels to the students. The Ground Training Instructor (GTI) alongside the students plans several expeds throughout the year, with the aim of going overseas at least once. The most recent expedition was a multiple activities trip in Benidorm. The MASUAS calendar also includes continuous AT periods over winter, Easter and summer camps where students may sample many of the above activities. The GTI and qualified students also runs day expeds during term time for all those interested. In the last 12 months there have been student expeds led in Scotland in the form of skiing and mountain biking, also all student run trips to North Wales.
Available to all MASUAS students is the Joint Service Adventurous Training (JSAT) scheme. This involves centers of excellence around the country run by tri service personnel specifying in various activities. The role of JSAT is to deliver the aims of AT through highly qualified and experienced instructors. Through JSAT courses, students can gain military and civilian recognised leadership qualifications which they can exercise during their time on MASUAS.
Through gaining leadership qualifications, students are encouraged to assist the GTI on expeds and even plan and lead their own expeditions. MASUAS has previously seen entirely student led expeds involving sailing, mountaineering, rock climbing and mountain biking.
Adventurous Training takes up a very large part of life on MASUAS. Through squadron based expeditions or through the Joint Service Adventurous Training Wing (JSAT) you will find something that you find enjoyable yet challenging. Whether you want to become a Rock Climbing Instructor or gain your Sky Diving A License you will develop yourself as a person through AT.
