Grob Tutor

Flying

All University Air Squadron students are entitled to up to 10 hours of free instructional flying each academic year. Flying is taught using a specially designed UAS syllabus which is intended to lead on to EFT (Elementary Flying Training) for those students accepted to join the RAF as pilots. At MASUAS the flying training is delivered in conjunction with 10 AEF (Air Experience Flight), also based at RAF Woodvale The Grob Tutor T1 is currently used by all UASs and AEFs to deliver flying training and Air Experience and is the aircraft flown during EFT.

The Grob Tutor T1 replaced the Royal Air Force's fleet of Bulldog primary training aircraft from 1999 onwards and unusually, the aircraft are not owned and maintained by the RAF, but carry civilian registrations and serviced under a Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

Basic flying at MASUAS follows a 30 hour instruction syllabus; from effects of controls to solo navigation flights. The syllabus includes both dual flying with an instructor and solo flying! Students who complete this introductory course can then carry on to an advanced syllabus that includes spinning, aerobatics and formation flying.

Our flying skills are put to the test annually with the Reid Trophy, an inter-UAS competition.
