The Royal Air Force has joined forces with the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Marines today to highlight 2013 Armed Forces Day events across Scotland with the RAF providing a number of flypasts from Typhoon, Tornado, Sea King and Spitfire.
Whilst the UK focus of Armed Forces Day will be in Nottingham on the 29th June, many Scottish communities will be hosting parades and other unique activities. 2 RAF Leuchars Typhoons of 1(Fighter) Squadron will be providing a flypast over the cities of Dundee, Edinburgh, and Glasgow while personnel including reservists from 602 (City of Glasgow) and 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadrons will provide marching contingents in those cities. The RAF Leuchars Pipe band will accompany the parade at Dundee.
Stirling Military Show including RAF Static displays kicks off the activities on 22nd June and will include a flying visit from a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. RAF Lossiemouth will be supporting the Moray Armed Forces Day Parade on 23rd June with a marching contingent, pipe band and static displays. During the parade, a Tornado GR4 crewed by XV(R) Squadron will conduct a flypast with a Sea King from 202 Squadron of RAF Lossiemouth giving a Search and Rescue role demonstration.
RAF personnel will attend as Armed Forces Day flags are raised on the 24th June in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee followed by Cupar on 26th June.
Officer Commanding 1(Fighter) Squadron said of the event
“On Armed Forces Day, as every day, Typhoon Force personnel will be on duty at RAF Leuchars ready to scramble and protect UK airspace and territory; our flypast over Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow is, therefore, a timely reminder of the role we play in protecting the UK populace.
Whenever we launch an aircraft it is a team effort - from the engineers on the ground, to the pilots in the air, to the air traffic controllers who guide them – and all of these personnel rely on the support of their families and friends and that of the general public, which is what makes Armed Forces Day an important date for us. The RAF will be taking part in events across Scotland and 1(Fighter) Squadron are proud to be representing them in the air.”
