RAF Leuchars MRT In Search For Missing Walker

Winter is a busy time for the RAF Leuchars Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) who have responded to a number of callouts already in 2012.

Their latest emergency call, saw RAF Leuchars MRT tasked by the Aeronautical Rescue Control Centre (ARCC) at RAF Kinloss to assist RAF Sea King R137 from D Flight, 202 Squadron based at RAF Lossiemouth, Aberdeen MRT, Braemar MRT, Tayside MRT and the Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) on an ongoing search for a 43-year old man who had gone missing whilst walking in the hills surrounding the Glenshee ski area.

Leuchars MRT hill parties searched the popular Munros - east and west of the A93. Thankfully the walker was located, safe and well by Tayside MRT as he attempted to descend from the summit of Carn a Gheoidh. Unaware of his exact location, he had survived a night having snow holed in several locations. He was walked down to below the cloud base and airlifted to safety by Sea King helicopter.
