Flying
Flying is a major part of being a member of NUAS and the flying training students receive is second to none. We fly the Grob 115E (otherwise known as the Grob Tutor), which is a carbon fibre, 2 Seater, fully aerobatic, propeller driven aircraft.
Each year students attend one compulsory flying week in the summer, and optional flying camps in Christmas and Easter are available. During term time, flying is usually available from Monday to Friday.
NUAS take part in an annual flying competition with East of Scotland UAS and Glasgow & Strathclyde UAS, known as the Scone Trophy.
The flying syllabus in NUAS is a reduced form of the Elementary Flying Training course taken by all RAF pilots after Initial Officer Training. It is approximately 30 hours long and includes tuition in general handling, instrument flying and medium level navigation, culminating in a solo navigation exercise. Once the syllabus is completed, further training is available in aerobatics, low level navigation, instrument flying and formation flying.
