Motto:"Swift To Attack"

Mission:“To understand, control, and exploit the battle space in order to deliver battle winning Combat Air Power"
and “To support the generation, development and sustainment of the RAF’s Support Helicopter Force so that they can best meet the JHC Mission”

Number 1 Group Headquarters is the coordinating organization for all front line, Fast-jet Force Elements and as such has functional responsibility for the teeth arm of the Royal Air Force today. Whether it is homeland defence of the UK airspace utilising the Typhoon, operational flying in Afghanistan in the Tornado GR4, or exercising with our NATO partners, the unified focus of the 12,000 personnel within Number 1 Group, based across 8 flying stations and one support unit, is being ready for operations, and when called upon providing the battle-winning edge.

To do this we must exploit the equipment we have in service now, spreading best practice and evolving our tactics, training and procedures to stay one step ahead in an uncertain world. Be that through home-based training, or exercising in Europe, the Middle East and the United States, we aim to train as we fight in as realistic a way as possible but cognisant of the impact we have on the communities in which we live and work. Through greater use of precision weapons, we will create the desired effect against any potential adversary, exemplified by our performance on Operation Telic in Iraq and Operation Ellamy in Libya, where Number 1 Group aircraft were key in shaping the battlespace for a successful Joint and Combined Campaign.

Moreover, as we look forward to working in a Network Enabled environment, where shared situational awareness will allow us to truly practice Effects Based Operations at every level of command, we have embraced the arrival of new systems such as the excellent multi-role Typhoon. Similarly, we will develop a Joint Combat Aircraft capability for land and carrier-borne operations withthe F35 Lightning II. In all that we do, now and in the future, we will continue to play a major part in an Air Force that strives to be first, and person for person is second to none.
