The Director of Legal Services is invited to attend the Air Force Board Standing Committee to provide a legal perspective.

Hailing from Aberdeen, Air Vice-Marshal Lindsay John Irvine read Classics at OxfordUniversity, then law at the CityUniversity, London and was called to the Bar of England and Wales at the Middle Temple in 1983.
Following practice at the Bar, he was commissioned into the Legal Branch of the Royal Air Force in 1986. He has had tours in advisory, court-martial prosecutions and operational legal roles at various ranks in MOD Head Office,HQ PTC and HQSTC,in the last as theinaugural Command Legal Adviser. He has served also in HQ British Forces Cyprus, and at Northwood on Permanent Joint HQ and Joint Force HQ staffs. Throughout his career, he has lectured extensively on Operational, Aviation and Civil Law including to Air and Maritime Warfare Centres and StaffCollege courses. Promoted to Air Commodore in 2003 as Deputy Director of Legal Services(RAF), he had a break from this role in 2006 to attend the Royal College of Defence Studies and acquired an MA in International Relations from KingsCollege, London.He was appointed the Director of Legal Services (RAF) in April 2009 in which role he is principal legal adviser to the Chief of the Air Staff and Air Force Board. In the 2014 New Year’s Honours List he was made a CB.
Air Vice-Marshal Irvine is married to Claire a senior Patent Attorney and they live in Oxfordshire and have a daughter and a son. He is a long time vintage aircraft pilot and owns an ex-RAF training aircraft. He strives to keep fit by running, skiing and occasional coxing.
