Deputy Commander Operations
The Deputy Commander of Operations is based at Air Command asthe RAF’s senior warfighter, responsible for the Force Generation and Delivery ofthe RAF’s contribution to Operations both at home and overseas.
Air Marshal G J BAGWELL CB CBE MSc RAF
Air Marshal Greg Bagwell joined the RAF in 1981 as a direct entrant. He served the majority of his flying career in Germany on the Tornado GR1/4 as a Qualified Weapons Instructor, and on exchange with the Canadian Air Force on the multi-role F/A 18 Hornet. Post-Cold War Operations between 1990-2001 included 5 Tours over Iraq, of which 2 were as the Squadron Commander of IX (B) Sqn, as well as Operation ENGADINE in Kosovo. He was the Coalition Air Operations Chief in the Al Udeid CAOC in 2004, where he oversaw air operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he commanded RAF Marham and the Tornado Force from 2004 to 2006.
Staff appointments include: MoD Directorate of Air Operations, Directing Staff on JSCSC 1, HQ 1 Group and ACOS J5 at PJHQ. He is also a graduate of the Indian Defence Services & Staff College (1996), UK HCSC (2007) and UK PINNACLE (2010).
Promoted to Air Vice-Marshal in 2009 and appointed as Air Officer Commanding No 1 Gp, he deployed as the UK JFACC for the initial phases of Operation ELLAMY in Libya. In 2011 he was appointed as Chief of Staff Joint Warfare Development in the PJHQ, later becoming the first Director Joint Warfare within the newly formed Joint Forces Command.
Promoted to Air Marshal in 2013, he is now Deputy Commander Operations at Air Command as the RAF’s senior warfighter, responsible for the Force Generation and Delivery of the RAF’s contribution to Operations both at home and overseas.
