Welcome to JHC Flying Station Aldergrove
The Station became Joint Helicopter Flying Station Aldergrove on 20 Sep 09 when after 91 years the RAF ensign was lowered for the last time. The Station provides a firm base for a large number of lodger units but its principle role remains to support flying. The departure of 230 Puma Sqn from Aldergrove in November 2009 resulted in a marked reduction in the impact of low flying, particularly at night, however flying training will still be conducted from Aldergrove by resident and visiting helicopter crews in the future. Aldergrove will continue to provide support to visiting Search and Rescue helicopters and may where practicable assist the search effort using its own military helicopter and fixed wing aircraft. Fast Jets will occasionally base from Aldergrove and conduct limited low flying training in the area as well as in support of local events and air shows. Throughout the summer the base also supports a flight of light aerobatic aircraft which are used exclusively to give air experience to local cadet forces and Air Training Corps Summer Camps.
We have a notable percentage of our personnel deployed, preparing to deploy or having just come back from operational detachments overseas lasting anything from 2-6 months. Personnel tend to deploy in small numbers rather than as a large formed unit and it is quite common for them to complete 2 shorter length detachments in a year. As a result of this, a significant focus is directed towards looking after our families and in encouraging them to make the most of the wonderful landscape in the Province or to attend events taking place in the community. We are fully committed to supporting a number of local charities and also try to engage at all levels with the wider community to have some fun and find mutual common ground as we do it.
