Interview - Geoff Ingram
Who are you?
Geoff Ingram
What’s your background?
I recently retired from the Royal Air Force following 23 yrs of Service. I’ve spent the last 16 years involved in RAF Athletics since I competed in my first decathlon in 1992.
How did you get into massage?
During that time I’ve sustained a number of injuries and, during the course of much treatment, some good, some not so, I have come to appreciate the real benefits of Sports Massage therapy in returning an athlete to full function following a muscle or skeletal injury.
What are your qualifications?
I used my resettlement to attend the Diploma Course in Personal Training and Sports Massage Therapy run by Premier Training in Bath. The course appealed to me on a number of levels; firstly as a training provider they are highly respected in the industry and secondly the course was a one-off residential course that allowed me to ‘hit the ground running’ so to speak and start treating clients as quickly as possible.
What injuries have you seen during the Visit?
A real mixed bag! Some of the athletes came to the Visit with existing ‘niggles’ and injuries whilst some suffered from the intensity of the training. Specifically, I treated pulled hamstrings, tight calf muscles, hip problems and generally tired and aching muscles!
Did you treat everyone?
Not quite! I operated an ‘open system’ whereby I would treat whoever needed and generally whenever they needed it.
Where did you treat them?
One of 2 places. I was able to bring a massage table out with me, which proved invaluable. I had actually come on the Visit to train myself so the majority of treatments occurred at the end of the training day in my apartment. The stadium also had an excellent physiotherapy room which, for a nominal fee, I was able to take advantage of on a number of occasions – plus it gave me a rest from the training!
Should a Massage Therapist come everytime?
Yes! Anything that allows the athletes to train harder and longer whilst taking advantage of the facilities on offer is most definitely a good thing. Likewise, paying the excess baggage charge for the massage table should be a yes as well.
Thanks Geoff and a final thank you from all of the athletes who have benefited from your magic hands during the Visit!
