The RAF Boulmer golf team have won the RAF Inter-Station Scratch Championships for 2012 following a 72 hole competition at Luffenham Heath Golf Club in Rutland.
After the first morning’s “greensomes” rounds the team lay in fifth place (of seven teams) but were not downhearted as only four points separated them from the top of the leaderboard. Good performances in the afternoon “betterball” format lifted them into third place overnight and they were well poised, only three points behind the leaders.
RAF Boulmer delivered the best performances in the second morning’s foursomes format and took a one point lead into the final stage (singles). They were able to fend off any competition from the other stations by also winning the singles format by a clear five points and were victorious by a six shot margin overall.
The team deserves a big pat on the back as they beat the hot favourites RAF Coningsby and there were a number of competitors in other teams who were RAF level players including the Captain of the Royal Air Force team .
Team Captain Jamie Nickless said:
“It’s a pleasure to be able to bring the trophy back to RAF Boulmer for the first time. Given the strong field and difficult format we certainly didn’t expect to win, but we played well together as a team throughout the competition.”
