RAF Vs North West Counties Select 2009 - Fleetwood

The team travelled to meet a North West Counties Select Side at the Gasworkers’ Club, Fleetwood, Lancs. The backdrop to this show brought memories flooding back to a couple of the older members of the team who frequented such establishments as North West Representatives in the past. For the majority of our younger boxers the show gave a completely new view of boxing within the RAF.

SAC Taylor (71kgs) beat J Gregory, Fleetwood CYP (pts)

SAC Parker (73kgs) lost to K Thomas, Fleetwood CYP (pts)

Fg Off Eddleston (88 kgs) beat M McGarvey, Fleetwood CYP (pts)

SAC Hill (86kgs) beat S Skirton, Fleetwood CYP (pts)

A strong partisan crowd created an electric atmosphere for the night’s boxing. Once more all the contests were extremely close, and it was a pleasant surprise to see that the pressure of the occasion failed to bias any of the well deserved results. I am sure that the chanting of ‘McGARVEY, McGARVEY, McGARVEY’ will still be ringing in the ears of Fg Off Eddleston as he returned to the ring for the first time since the Lord Wakefield’s Finals.

FS Chapple is trying to ensure that SAC Parker is afforded the opportunity to avenge the very close pts defeat by seeking a re-match with K Thomas at the next RAF Wyton Show.

SAC Hill outclassed a very game Skirton. The Fleetwood man tried a variety of strong arm tactics to unsettle Hill, in what was a very good display by the slick boxing airman. Both SAC Wheat and SAC Taylor overcame strong opponents to take the team match 4-1.

Both shows went very well, and the tally of 7 victories from 8 contests was just reward for the efforts of the team as a whole.
