Military Training Wing

The Wing comprises of two Squadrons. . .

Trenchard Squadron

Hugh Trenchard

Trenchard Squadron concentrates on the management of trainees, reinforcing the ethos of the RAF instilled in them by Recruit Training Sqn at RAF Halton and focussing it on their chosen trade. Trainees undertaking the Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic (AMM) training from 9 Sep 04 were the first to be commanded by OC Trenchard Sqn followed by United Arab Emirates trainees on BTEC Courses on 20 Sep 04. On 31 Jan 05 Armourers (Eng Tech W) and Survival Equipment Fitters (SE Fitt) trainees joined Trenchard Sqn.

Force Development Training Squadron

The Force Development concept provides a means by which personnel can be developed through individual and collective training activity in 5 main areas, namely: Leadership, Air Power, Ethos, Common Military Skills and Training for Deployed Operations. The aim is to ensure the Royal Air Force maintains a competitive edge by ensuring it develops the whole person and maximises their potential whatever the environment.

At the Cosford Site the task is not only to provide trade specific training for the trainees but also to ensure they can carry out their duties alongside their colleagues in an expeditionary warfighting environment. This warfighter philosophy is embedded through many different activities such as studying the history and current capabilities of the RAF, Military Field Training, Fitness Training, Military Skills competitions and training in a simulated Deployed Operations Environment.

The PEd Flt at RAF Cosford is part of FDTS and provides all regular Stn PEd Flt functions encouraging fitness and health at all levels in accordance with Air Force policy, in particular administering the RAF Fitness Test and the impending Operational Fitness Test. In conjunction with Medical Centre staff, PTIs employed within the Remedial Centre instruct and guide Service personnel recovering from physical injuries, whilst a significant proportion of PEd Flt manpower is required for the delivery of the Formal PEd Training Syllabus. RAF Cosford is also the Home for Sport for 7 major RAF sports associations and provides facilities for many other national and international sporting events.
