No1 School of Technical Training

No 1 School of Technical Training (No1 SofTT)

No 1 School of Technical Training (No 1 SoTT) accounts for a significant number of the permanent staff at RAF Cosford. It comprises 400 Service and Civilian members dedicated to providing world class aeronautical engineering training to around 2000 national and international Phase 2 trainees and Phase 3 students annually, offering an extensive range of Advanced Apprenticeship courses spanning Mechanical, Avionics, Weapons and Survival Equipment disciplines, as well as Human Factors and Expedient Repair training. The welfare and duty of care support to our trainees is meticulously administered, notably acknowledged in an Ofsted inspection report at the end of 2011 that confirmed the provision of excellent welfare and training.

April 2013 saw the culmination of a year long programme to position No 1 SoTT as a streamlined Formed Unit under the command of an Aerosystems Engineer Wing Commander, within the Defence School of Aeronautical Engineering (DSAE) at RAF Cosford. This has most recently involved restructuring of its squadrons to allow it to focus more on training delivery, with centralised training support activities linked to those governed by the wider DSAE Headquarters. Consequently, No 1 SoTT is well positioned to celebrate enduring world-class aeronautical engineering training and to honour the prestigious heritage of past generations of RAF technician cadres.

Our reputation and heritage, sustained by generations of trainees and staff, work hand in glove with the principles espoused in Air Publication No 1 - Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence (RISE) – to provide the best context and culture within which to operate and train. Furthermore, No 1 SoTT is proud to be associated with and provide technical expertise and support to external agencies including: World Skills competition; Women in Science & Engineering (WiSE); Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM); and Royal Aeronautical Society lectures, to name but a few.
