No 115 (R) Sqn (formerly known as the Central Flying School (CFS) (Elementary) Squadron) has been based at RAF College Cranwell since 1995 and is part of No 1 Elementary Flying Training School (1 EFTS). Although under the command of the OC No 1 EFTS, 115 (R) Sqn is responsible to HQ CFS for the maintenance of standards on the various flying instructor courses that it conducts. In common with other CFS
units, the Elementary Sqn conducts flying instructor courses for experienced pilots from the 3 UK Armed Forces as well as the armed forces of some overseas countries. The Main Course for new instructors is approximately 6 months long, including 3 weeks of ground school, and has 80 flying hours. The Refresher Course is 2 months long with 40 flying hours and, as the name implies, is for previously qualified instructors of any background. The majority of graduates of the CFS courses will work within the Elementary Flying Training (EFT) system on one of the RAF EFT Squadrons, the University Air Squadrons or with the Army and Navy at RAF Barkston Heath. For details of all of the activities of the Central Flying School visit the website.
