Station Cricket at RAF Halton

Station Cricket

One of the core aims of the RAFCA is to facilitate support to all levels of the game and to all players, of whatever ability within the Service. We operate a culture of inclusivity for all and attempt to ensure there is the opportunity for everyone in the Service to partake in the sport of cricket and that it is taxing but fun. Station level cricket can take the form of inter squadron or section matches, as part of the Commanding Officer’s Cup competition or as part of the inter station friendlies, league and RAF Cup competitions. Most stations have a Cricket Committee, operating under an Officer in Charge (OIC) who, in conjunction with the PEd Flt organise and promote the game both on match days and at weekly practice sessions. You are encouraged to make contact with the OIC Cricket at your station at your earliest convenience.

The organisation, administration and governance of Station Cricket can be best illustrated by viewing the initial aspects of this PowerPoint presentation. Working under the Director of Cricket pillar, 10 main objectives have been set to understand and attempt to improve cricket played at station level. The main Point of Contact for station matters is the RAFCA Cricket Development Officer - Tel: 01993 897532 (95461 7532)

For those players who are identified as having the potential to play at a higher representative level, the first step is provided by the RAF Eagles XI where players, nominated by their OICs, will be tested against selected opposition on an elevated standard of pitch. From that point, separate Under 25 and Development XIs present an opportunity to further identify players and grow them into future senior representative players.

Being a member of RAFCA and participating in station cricket has many advantages. Not only will you enjoy the challenge and camaraderie of weekly cricket throughout the summer (and, possibly even a cricket tour), if you or your station is successful enough, you may be fortunate enough to play at the home of RAF cricket; RAF Vine Lane, where the playing surface is revered amongst amateur and professional players alike as being one of the finest in Southern England. Other opportunities include discounted playing equipment and clothing and watching the Inter Services Twenty20 Tournament, held at Lords, the home of cricket. Additionally, station cricketers have the opportunity to join and play for The Adastrian Cricket Club, the RAF’s recreational cricket club. The Adastrians play most of their matches at weekends, many of which are held at Vine Lane, Uxbridge.

Every cricketer, umpire or scorer in the RAF, of whatever experience of ability, is valued as part of the RAF cricketing community. As a result, do not delay - please contact your OIC ASAP and get involved at your station. Enjoy being part of a great game and a great Association, within a great Service.
