A Newcomers Perspective
Having always had a love of mountain biking in all shapes and forms I couldn’t wait to take advantage of what the RAF has to offer. Having an injury to both legs whilst in technical training meant a setback, however after getting back to full health I decided it was about time I got involved.
After a lengthy and welcoming conversation with the clubs’ mountain biking secretary I got off the phone having volunteered to jump in at the deep end – take part in a 24 hour endurance race. This was my first ever race or competition in the sport and I was really excited.
The event itself was hard work but brilliant and the support from the other RAF guys was fantastic - it really was a team event and whether they were racing or part of the back-up team, everyone was really supportive. It was also really great to see the public in full support of the RAF and to be around other active people having a brilliant time together.
I can’t wait to compete again and to get more involved with the RAF Cycling Club, in both non-competitive and competitive events. This is a sport that varies from fun to full-on competitiveness - usually having a good mix.
So if you like cycling in any shape or form, whether it be tearing down a muddy, rocky and rutted hill or just taking a casual Sunday ride, there’s a great variety on offer usually with a brilliant social side to it as well.
