Around Digby

Lincoln (12miles)

Lincoln Cathedral

Lincoln Cathedral is one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe and dates from 1072. The Cathedral was recently used in the filming of the Da Vinci Code.

Next to the Cathedral is Lincoln Castle which hosts one of only four remaining original copies of the Magna Carta of which the then Bishop of Lincoln was a witness to the signing.

The museum and Usher Art Gallery are also well worth a visit

Sleaford (9miles)

Is a quiet market town and the administrative centre for Kesteven. The magnificent Church has monuments to the Carre family, who built the Grammar School (1604) and the Almshouses (1636).

Newark (18 miles)

Has a small castle where King John died (1216) and a fine Church. Newark is on the main routes to Southwell (splendid minster) and Nottingham (don’t forget to see the Castle).

Grantham (23 miles)

Has excellent rail connections to both London and the North. The church has a spire 279 feet high and a chained library.

Cranwell (6 miles)

Is intimately connected to the RAF and to RAF Digby (look at our badge!). Its College was established in 1920 but the present splendid buildings date mainly from 1929-1933, with others completed recently. The camp boasts a swimming pool and newly refurbished bowling alley; both of which are open to Digby personnel.
