RAF Flying Clubs’ AssociationCompetitions Summer Update 2016
As we continue to enjoythe fine British summer (!) I thought that I would take the opportunity toupdate you all on a few competition activities.
I am delighted to report that RAFFCAmember Martin Reynolds, along with crew member Peter Williams, won this year’sTOPNAV event on 7th May. Well done! RAFFCA has a good record in these events, andMartin has agreed to act as ‘TOPNAV’ lead within RAFFCA in order to helpdevelop this area of competition further. There is an aspiration to hold a couple of training events next year, building towards the main TOPNAV event in May 17. If you are interested in hosting one at yourclub, please let me know.
RAFFCAAerobatic Competition and Showcase
The RAFFCA Aerobatic Competition andShowcase Day at Halton was extremely well received, although the British summerconspired against us to disallow any aerobatic flying (this is something of atheme at aerobatic competition this year). The fly-in was still very well attended, and it was fantastic to see somany keen would-be flyers from this year’s crop of Junior Ranks PilotScholarship Scheme scholars. TheAssociation’s new Tecnam P2008, supported by the RAF Charitable Trust, wasunveiled; The Spirit of Ayre Pitts build was on show for all to see thefantastic progress which is being made, and Group Captain Mark Manwaring’s‘Flight of the Navigator’ RV build for a round-the-world attempt also attractedmuch attention.
BritishAerobatic Association Events
RAFFCA members have already competed ata number of aerobatic events through 2016. Of particular note, CT Phil Burgess has now moved up to Unlimited leveland finished in 3rd place at the British Championships. Cpl Paul Morrison and I have both competed onceeach at Sports level, with Flt Lt Neil Whitehead, Flt Lt Matt Williams and CaptMark Palmer all having taken their first competition steps at Club level. The British Sports and Intermediate Level AerobaticChampionships will take place at Peterborough Conington on Fri/Sat 5th/6thAugust. Please do encourage your clubmembers to come along and see what the next steps are all about, beyond theRAFFCA competition. Volunteers to assistthe judges will be particularly welcome!
Flt Lt Pete Barker has been appointed asExped Member for RAFFCA, in order to collate all expedition activity from clubsand if there is enough interest to organise a RAFFCA expedition. I am sure that he will be in touch soon, soplease start to think about a great idea for an RAFFCA exped. It would be especially good to have somethingfitting in 2018 for the 100th anniversary of the RAF!
An early date for the diary! Next year’s RAFFCA Aerobatic Competition is penciled in for 20th/21st May. Depending how plans progress this may be atwo-day event.
