Combined Services; May 11

On 24 May 11, the Combined Services Men and Ladies golf teams played representative matches at Frilford Heath GC, Abingdon, Oxon. The matches are now becoming a traditional event and for the second year in succession the Men's opposition came in the shape of the Civil Service while the Ladies took on a team from the British Police. Frilford Heath proved to be an excellent venue with its three 18 hole courses giving flexibility without impinging on the members. The teams were made to feel most welcome and the Secretary (ex Army officer) was very helpful. All the teams enjoyed sampling two of the courses and the venue proved to be very popular with all concerned.

The matches themselves provided both the Civil Service Men and the Police Ladies with revenge for their 2010 defeats. Both matches were well poised at lunchtime following the foursomes with just one point difference in both cases. However, the afternoon singles play was something of disaster for both Men and Ladies with points proving very difficult to come by. Pick of the ladies was LPT Kerry Parnell (RN) making her Combined Services debut who halved her foursomes match and was then one of only two afternoon successes. On the men's side, Major Rick Smart (Army) was the only one hundred per cent record of the day. Cpl Ben Churchill (Army) dropped just a half point while Flt Lt Liam Pucill (RAF) registered a resounding singles win against a strong opponent.
