Mens Masters
RAF Masters hockey provides an outlet for players to continue playing at a representative level after they have hit their 35th birthday. The RAF Masters is open to both serving and ex-serving players, thereby giving the opportunity for retired personnel to keep in touch with their old friends and sparring partners. It also provides the opportunity for players who have come to the game of hockey late the chance to play representative hockey as previous RAF representation is not a pre-requisite for selection. The aims of RAF Masters hockey are to enjoy the hockey, to benefit from coaching and continue to develop as players well into their 40’s and, most importantly, to enjoy the craic of playing with old friends and acquaintances, both within the Services and outside in civilian clubs. The social side of the game is as important as the playing side, with post-match hosting of the opposition in a local hostelry key to the development of a ‘club’ inclusive atmosphere within the RAF Masters set-up. Each season is geared to the winning of the Inter Services Tournament in March each year, but the matches leading up to the tournament provide the opportunity to blood new players, develop skills, tactics and formations and enjoy each other’s company before final selection of a squad of 16 to compete against the Royal Navy and Army. The ultimate goal is to win, but in doing so, to have a lot of fun along the way. In addition funds are allocated by the RAFHA to enable the Masters to tour overseas which is being planned for 2012.
