Engineering and Logistics Wing

Engineering and Logistics Wing provides a broad range of engineering and logistical functions to support aircraft, the Station, lodger and parented units. Prior to the withdrawal from service of the Nimrod MR2 in March 2010, its main function was to ensure that the Nimrod aircraft was prepared and ready for flight, both at home and abroad.

To do so, required over 600 service and MOD civilian personnel, with the support on Stn of personnel from BAE Systems and Cobham. The day-to-day maintenance of the aircraft was undertaken by the Nimrod Line Squadron, with more in-depth maintenance being undertaken by the Nimrod Support Group. To support them in that activity, the Engineering and Logistics Wing also undertook the maintenance of mechanical and avionic components, ground support equipment, mechanical transport, and armament equipment, whilst maintaining and providing the aircrew with survival equipment and aircrew clothing. In the process, all engineering activity was coordinated through engineering operations, which undertook the coordination of day-to-day engineering activity to the management and archiving of all documentation generated on Unit.

The Engineering and Logistics Wing also provides for the management, distribution and storage of materiel and fuels to ensure that all stock is available in the right place at the right time. This includes managing and accounting for all assets. In addition, the Wing also manages and operates an extensive fleet of mechanical transport to deal with snow and ice operations to aircraft refueling and towing, and provides wide-ranging support to visiting aircraft, through movements and the visiting aircraft support section. It also operates an extensive workshop facility for the manufacturer and repair of components, whilst implementing a Quality Management System to ensure compliance with policy and procedures, and a Continuous Improvement team to improve working practices.

The Wing also coordinates other functions, such as waste management and the provision of clothing to all Stn personnel to the provision of furniture for all offices and Married Quarters. More recently, the Wing had been preparing for the arrival of the Nimrod MRA4. This included the setting up of the MRA4 Maintenance Squadron to manage and deal with the day-to-day aspects of maintaining that aircraft.
