Due to closure of the In-Service Degree Scheme, individuals eligible to study through the scheme should note that the final deadline for registration is 31 October 2011. All registrations must be received by this date in accordance with the guidance below.

The RAF In-Service Degree Scheme

In order to attract more school leavers directly into the Service to train as pilots and navigators, the RAF has joined forces with the Open University (OU) to offer an In-Service Degree Scheme (ISDS). The OU offers a wide variety of supported open learning courses and is one of the top Universities in the country.

The ISDS offers students the opportunity to learn to fly and accumulate credit points towards a degree from RAF training, then go on to complete an OU degree at a later stage in their career. In addition to earning a salary throughout their training, further funding is available for OU courses. The scheme allows maximum flexibility to avoid conflict between the RAF's professional training, operational commitments and individual study needs. Applicants should normally be under 20 years of age on the day they join the RAF.

The In-service Degree Scheme (ISDS), offered to Pilots and WSOs who joined teh RAF prior to the age of 20, has changed its qualifying and running criteria. Details of the changes to the Scheme can be found in AP3379 Leaflet 2550.

The RAF is committed to developing its personnel to maximise their potential and to provide opportunities to obtain relevant qualifications. This strategy is very much a part of the RAF's commitment to recruit, train and retain the best.
