Now that you have decided that a Degree is for you it is time to choose which of the 4 universities you will use.

Open University:

The OU has long been associated with high quality distance learning. Most of its provision is through taught modules usually worth 30 or 60 credits each. This provides a structured framework for learning, but with flexibility and recognition of work experience built into the individual modules. The OU will provide Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) for previous courses. There are specific starting times, usually February, May and November for the taught modules.

Staffordshire University:

Staffordshire places an emphasis on face-to-face delivery. It too can provide APL both for courses and work experience. Its taught modules tend to be smaller than the OU’s at 15 or 30 credits. This would suit someone who prefers a more structured programme and likes to have personal contact with their staff and fellow students. There are specific starting times for taught modules, which may vary depending upon demand.

University of Chester:

Chester offers a flexible programme of negotiated work-based and work-related learning. Learners will negotiate their own individual learning pathway rather than following a prescribed route. This will require positive support from work and a degree of self-motivation, placing the learner in control. It allows for 'on-the-job' experiential learning, though Chester also offers taught modules - largely supported online - in all topic areas. They will accept both types of APL - for more information view the guidance document here.

University of Derby:

Derby will also provide work-based negotiated learning which may be particularly suited to personnel engaged within project work, where they can use the project as a ‘learning vehicle’. Derby also have taught modules which can be taken in conjunction with the work-based learning. Derby uses the Learning Through Work website, which supports the student to develop an online learning contract. Derby will accept both types of APL. Courses start in January, April and September.
