About the awards

City & Guilds Senior Awards for the RAF recognise the leadership and management experience, personal achievement and the applied professional knowledge of both SNCOs and officers. This special accreditation structure for members of the Service provides recipients with well-regarded awards which are recognised in both civilian and military worlds.

In the civilian world, the awards are used by blue chip companies as a way of accrediting management development programmes. They are also offered directly by 20 of the UK 's leading universities, among them Bath, Leeds and Cardiff , and are recognised by many more.

It should be noted that the City & Guilds Senior Awards are a form of accreditation which recognize the abilities that the recipient already possesses. They are not to be confused with City & Guilds qualifications and are to be viewed as membership of a professional body.

The RAF and City & Guilds are now able to accredit military professional development with Senior Awards in Leadership and Management at three levels:

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note these awards DO NOT attract AIP and SLCs CANNOT be used to purchase the awards.

Licentiateship (LCGI)

The Licentiateship award is at a supervisory/first line management skills level. The City & Guilds Institute have provided a notional quotient of the Licentiateship's value, deeming it to be comparable to undergraduate level (Certificate of HE or Foundation Degree). The Licentiateship is available to:

• Commissioned Officers who have completed Initial Officer Training.

• Substantive Sergeants (including NCA Sergeants) and ranks above.

Graduateship (GCGI)

The Graduateship award is at a middle management skills level. The City & Guilds Institute have provided a notional quotient of the Graduateship's value, deeming it to be comparable to graduate level. The Graduateship is available to:

• Flight lieutenants with at least 2 years in substantive rank and ranks above.

• Chief technicians or flight sergeants (including NCA flight sergeants) with at least 2 years in substantive rank and warrant officers. Flight sergeants promoted from chief technician may also count their time in the rank of chief technician towards the 2 year requirement.

Membership (MCGI)

The Membership award is at a strategic management/chartered professional skills level. The City & Guilds Institute have provided a notional quotient of the Membership's value, deeming it to be comparable to post-graduate level. The Membership is available to:

• Squadron leaders at least 2 years in substantive rank and ranks above.

• RAF warrant officers and master aircrew with at least 2 years in substantive rank.

A Senior Award identifies you as a highly motivated individual who can handle pressure and new challenges and who will grasp the opportunity to develop new skills. Senior Awards allow you to gain valuable recognition for your professional and academic development within the military, and will provide your civilian employers with a recognised performance benchmark. The awards are offered under City & Guilds Royal Charter and carry with them the added distinction of the post nominal letters LCGI, GCGI or MCGI.

Application

To gain the award you will be required to complete the Application Form and submit:

• A full CV
• A copy of your Service Record / JPA Assignment Record (to show your length in substantive rank)
• A cheque made payable to MoD Accounting Officer for the appropriate fee.

Service Leavers

Retired personnel may apply for Senior Awards up to 2 years after they have left the RAF. Thereafter, retired personnel are required to apply directly to City & Guilds.

Reserve Forces

Members of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and the RAF Volunteer Reserve may apply for City & Guilds Senior Awards. The requirements for members of the reserve forces in terms of rank and seniority are the same as the requirements for regular forces.
