Operations Wing
Operations
Operations Wing provides the support and infrastructure to enable the flying squadrons to operate safely and efficiently. It comprises C4I(Command & Control, Communications, Computing and Information) Squadron Operations Squadron, and Air Traffic Control. Operations Wing also manages the Simulator, RAF Leuchars Met Office and the Defence Fire Service.
Met Office
There has been a Met Office at Leuchars since 1922 providing weather observations on a regular basis. Consequently there is a comprehensive climate record available for the airfield, probably one of the longest records available for the present military airfields in the UK.
The forecaster has modern technology enabling rapid access to a wealth of up-to-date information including satellite images, radar rainfall pictures and many surface observations. This enables the forecaster to keep aircrew aware of any developments that may affect their operations.
In addition, forecasts, observations and climate information for virtually all other parts of the world are readily available - this being a useful source of information for all squadron detachments.
Fire Service
Fire cover for the Station is provided by the Defence Fire and Rescue service (DFRS). Its primary role is to provide fire cover for the Station’s flying task and secondly for the technical and domestic buildings, which includes the on-site Service Families Accommodation. In addition, the DFRS provides the Station with training for both military and civilian personnel on fire related matters, carries out functional tests to the Station’s fire alarm systems, as well as checking and servicing all first aid fire appliances and emergency lighting systems.
