Central Flying School Tucano Squadron

Embedded within Number 1 Flying Training School, which provides Basic Fast Jet Training for all Royal Air Force and Royal Navy student pilots, the Central Flying School (Tucano) Squadron has two primary functions: it trains qualified flying instructors for employment at Linton-on-Ouse; and it monitors the standard of flying and instruction of the large instructional staff, comprising 54 qualified flying instructors, and 12 simulator instructors. The Squadron typically has a staff of 7, and is organised into 2 flights:

Instructor Training Flight (ITF). The ITF is responsible for:

  • Training Tucano Qualified Flying Instructors (QFIs). Students are RAF and RN pilots from all aviation backgrounds.
  • Conducting Refresher Courses for flying instructors who have been away from instructing or who have not previously instructed on the Tucano, and for pilots who have not been on flying duties for some time.
  • Providing UK & RAF Orientation Courses for foreign aircrew embarking on exchange tours in the UK .

Standards Flight . Standards Flight is responsible for:

  • Monitoring and promoting high standards of flying and instruction across all No1 FTS staff.
  • Assisting Tucano QFIs to upgrade their instructional qualifications. This includes not only flying exercises, but also an in-depth knowledge of an extensive range of flying associated subjects such as meteorology, aerodynamics and technical aspects of aircraft systems.
  • Training Tucano Instrument Rating Examiners.
