Welcome to RAF Lossiemouth, one of the largest and busiest fast-jet bases in the Royal Air Force.
The primary role of RAF Lossiemouth is to provide Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) North. QRA is the Royal Air Force’s front line defence of the UK 365 days a year. RAF Lossiemouth became a Typhoon main operating base in summer 2014 and is now home to three front line squadrons. 6 Squadron and 1(Fighter) Squadron relocated to the Station in June and September 2014 respectively; they were followed by II(AC) Squadron in early 2015.
RAF Lossiemouth is also home to XV (Reserve) Squadron and 5 Force Protection Wing Headquarters, comprising No.s 51 Squadron RAF Regiment and 2622 Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force.
The Station is large and very busy and although newcomers can be assured of a warm reception, the sheer size of the Station and the widely dispersed families’ estate can appear daunting to those who have not lived and worked here before. RAF Lossiemouth’s ability to generate and maintain an efficient and effective operational capability is dependant on the contribution of all service, MoD civilian and contractor personnel working together as a cohesive team. To that end, all personnel are encouraged to take time to enjoy the plethora of sporting and leisure activities available both on the Station and in the surrounding areas. Outdoor pursuits are particularly well catered for, including: golf, fishing, skiing, hill-walking and mountaineering to name a few.
