Lossiemouth Weather
Although the perception is of the far, frozen, snow-bound north, the opposite holds true. Lossiemouth boasts one of the driest areas in the country for rainfall (circa 25 inches per year, similar to London’s 24 inches). The good weather factor is one of the reasons the base is here!
Snow does fall, but when you hear reports of roads blocked and many delays, you will find that the little pocket around Lossiemouth is invariably green in colour. The snowploughs around here are used more for clearing the roads of blown sand from the fields during Spring than for clearing snow.
Haar (Sea Fog) can be a problem for the immediate coastal area during late Spring and early Summer, but head inland and you will enjoy a pleasantly warm day. If a good southerly airstream persists at Lossiemouth, the temperature can reach 30° Centigrade, but if the sea breeze takes over head inland again for the warmer spots.
Northeasterly winds behind a slow moving depression are our worst time - raw - and very wet.
Lossiemouth experiences a maritime temperate climate with generally cool summers and mild winters, and a relatively small annual temperature range. This is due to the sea which has a much higher heat capacity than soil and rock. Seawater takes longer to warm up in summer, but once heated it retains its energy long after the surrounding land has cooled down, helping to moderate the climate.
