Why We Are Here?
OUR MISSION
The Station’s principal task is to ensure that the four operational squadrons based at Lyneham – Numbers XXIV, 30, 47 and LXX Squadrons – are able to meet their commitments. We operate four Marks of aircraft: C-130K Mks 1 and 3 (Numbers 47 and LXX Squadrons) and C-130J Mks 4 and 5 (Numbers 24 and 30 Squadrons). These aircraft conduct Strategic airlift (inter-theatre, generally long range) originating from Lyneham and Tactical airlift (intra-theatre, generally shorter range) using assets deployed for short or extended periods. In addition, all Squadrons have crews trained in an extended range of capabilities, including strip landing and air delivery by day and by night. Moreover, a number of Mk3 aircraft have been upgraded to the locally known ‘3A’ state, which will provide better avionics and defensive aids. The C-130J tactical capability is is well advanced, particularly in the NVG role. Clearances for the air delivery of large stores are forthcoming.
The Station is proud of its close working relationship with the Army, in particular with 16 Air Assault Brigade, whom we view as one of our principal ‘customers’. Indeed, we have an independent Army unit based at Lyneham – 47 Air Despatch Squadron, Royal Logistics Corps – which is responsible for the preparation and despatch of all equipment dropped by parachute from the Hercules.
